Interview w/ Chicago's Finest 5 Star

Whats up 5Star? for those unfamiliar, breakdown the meaning of the name and your movement. What's good.
Well, I was given the name 5 Star for the 5 things I have become known for namely; an emcee, a doctor, an author, spoken-word artist and songwriter. Writing has been always something that comes natural to me. Aside from doing surgery, all of the other aspects of my movement as an artist include writing on some level. 5 Star has also been know to mean excellence as well and I definitely plan on doing the name justice. The movement is real and the goal is to be an artist named with some of the greats, it's that simple.
The average joe might be suffice with a career in the medical field but you seem to have a lot going on. How do you handle your day to day with your practice and your music?
Well, both are a challenge for sure. It can get real crazy at times. The world of medicine is very regimented. You train for years to learn how to practice surgery safely. At times you literally have peoples lives in your hands and it's a huge privilege to have that sort of impact on people. You don't guess your way through an operation, you make precise moves and eliminate mistakes, there are no overdubs and "let me get that again." I'm fortunate that music comes to me very naturally. I don't have to make myself write music, I just hear it through the beat and melody. Certainly, I have to manage my time more than most, but when you love something like music, it chooses you, you don't decide to be an artist.
Do people at work know what you do after work? What's their reaction?
I try not to mix the two to be honest. There are a select few who know the two worlds I live in, but it's a difficult situation at times. People in medicine often don't think about another career, their passion is for practicing medicine. Often times the stigma is that my music career interferes with my medical career. I tend to be quite a private person at the hospital, but I do often get asked about my tattoos. My reply, "I do music." Many people say, "so why would you want to be a Hip-Hop artist when you are a doctor?" I know it's hard for people to understand, but let me put it like this; medicine is my job which I take a lot of pride in helping people, and music is my soul. That's the best way to explain it.
Your also an accomplished spoken word poet with a published book out. How did you get started in that field and why the transition to hip hop?
Well, Chicago is often said to be the birthplace of spoken-word. It's is an art form that really lends itself to creativity and performance, so I got hooked right away. I started writing and performing anywhere and everywhere, and eventually gained some notoriety. I eventually had so much material that I decided to do a book, which got published through a publisher in Chicago. In reality, it is 1 of 4 books I've written, but I just got so focused on music, I put the books away for now.
The transition to music came real natural for me. Spoken-word is often rhythmic and my style really fit perfectly with writing bars and making songs. I write and hear melodies through the beat, so music is the perfect way for me to be creative. I don't write bars without hearing the music, the beat gives me the path.
So at the end of the day why hip hop? what do you feel you have to offer to the world musically?
I've been told that my eyes and my pen tell stories like none other. I'm here to challenge every perspective, insight and sterotype. The goal is to bring back creativity without losing people in mundane lyrics and speeches. So much is made today of how we're losing true Hip-Hop music, I just think we are losing creativity in our art form. A message that people don't like listening to, might as well be a poor message. I put the emphasis on making songs, complete songs; great beats, great hooks, metaphors and a message.
You have been working on some big records lately, you have a new single called 'Get To Know U' getting some love on the airwaves. Whats the concept of the song and what do you want listeners to experience?
'Get To Know U' is a throwback of sorts. It's a track but it's more of a story. It brings people through 2 perspectives about a relationship in one scene. It demonstrates how a woman and man can be in the same situation and think the exact opposite. I know everyone can relate to that. (laugh) It's what music has the power to do, and that is speak about real life issues in an interesting way, a way everyone can identify with. Yeah, we spinning in 12 markets currently and I am expecting big things from this record.
One of the producers your currently working with is Jimi Kendrix, a multi platinum producer for Ja Rule, Jay Z and 50 Cent and more. How did you guys link up and whats in store?
Jimi Kendrix is a huge talent. He has done some really big records and everytime I get the opportunity to do a record with him, I feel grateful. Jimi produced the first single, 'Get To Know U', the second and third single. The guy is an amazing talent, and I'm appreciative that he recognizes my abilities as an artist. As Jimi will tell you, he does a beat in a day and I send it back the next, we just see things clearly through the music. The greatest thing about Jimi is that he listens, takes advice and gives it all in the same conversation. Jimi heard about me through his brothers, through The Smith Brother's imprint, and he hit me up and the rest is history. The records we have coming out are big hits, even someone of Jimi's stature will tell you that.
Whats a 5 Star Stage show like?
My show is about bringing all the music out in the open. Of course you have to feel out the venue but I try to bring a versatility to the stage performance. Whether it's a capella spitting or club singles, you're going to hear it all. I don't hold back. What I've always recognized is that if you feel strongly about the music you present, the audience gets that. I know what I'm capable in this industry and my show demonstrates that confidence.
Whats the next project on your agenda?
Right now we are in the middle of a radio campaign. My company, MD Entertainment, LLC is striving to really concentrate on the brand 5 Star not just the artist. Certainly, I want to take the music to the next level. Exposure of myself as an artist is a key agenda item.
Where can fans find you online?
www.myspace.com/5star1, www.youtube.com/5starhiphop, www.twitter.com/5star1 , www.sonicbids.com/5star....better yet just Google ME! "5 Star Get To Know U"
Any shouts?
Got to shout out Shondel Harrison, COO of my company MD Entertainment, LLC. I have to plug all the producers and artists in Chicago I have had the opportunity to collaborate with. I really want to thank I-Standard for always showing support for the 5 Star movement. Certainly, a huge shout out goes to Jimi Kendrix and The Smith Brothers for believing in me as an artist, and for helping to make such great music. I got to thank Eric Beasley (Asylum), Ant Rich (Jive), and Skid (Bad Boy) for their advice and support. Oh, and last but not least Kevin Writer, an amazing songwriter, producer and artist.

Interview w/ Boston's Finest, Mr Harvey

Mr Harvey!! Who are you and what the f*ck do you do?
I am Mr. Harvey a.k.a Better Than Everybody You Ever F*cking Heard a.k.a He Who Needs A Fan Base. What I does is spit that hot fire. I am an artist reigning out of Boston, Ma. looking to make an impact on the music industry.
Why hip hop? And when did it take hold for you?
Well music was always in my soul. Hip hop is just the area of it that allows me to get my story out to the public that will best understand it. It took a hold of me when I finished college in ’05. I played around with it most of my life but knew that I had to be fully involved in it around that time. So I became a student of the many areas for about a year or so and realized that I had to either be a writer or performer….can’t choose so I’m a do both.
If there were 5 artists you could dissect and take peices from to describe who you are as an emcee, who would they be and why? (Example: Slick Rick because Im a story teller)
KRS-1, B.I.G, 2pac, Jay-Z and you can pick my fifth it’s either 50/ Lil Wayne/Kanye West. I would take KRS’ love for the art, B.I.G’s wittiness, Pac’s ability to make you feel his hunger, Jay’s charisma, and 50/Lil Wayne/Kanye’s patience and ability to take over when the time presented itself.
Congrats on the 'Best Male' rapper UMA nomination! How did you react when you heard and why do you think the title is fitting?
Good looking. Well when I first heard that I was nominated I was like about time Boston started acknowledging that I was doing my thing, then they told me it was in N.Y. I was shocked and honored at the same time. I couldn’t help but to feel somewhat good about everything that I have been doing with my career to get me to this point when I heard the news. As far as the title I feel like I can be the best at what ever category someone put me in, so to be considered as ‘The Best Male Rapper’ I feel like I belong there.
Define the Mr Harvey grind, let people know how you do.
Mr. Harvey’s grind is growing as I type. You see aside from this music thing I wear many different hats. I’m a father, a son, and a brother. Each to who fits relies on me to get us out of our current living environment. So with that being said who ever I make eye contact with gets the ear full “hey go to my website mrharvey.com and let me know what you think. I’m about to sacrifice a little bit more so I can get in the studio more, but I can say when I do get it in I’m there until what ever we planned to get done is done. I have a new campaign that I working on at the moment also. It’s the “Looking For A Fan Base” campaign. So I will be hitting the ground running with that as soon as I get all of the materials needed. People are really starting to believe in me and I know why. Now it’s time to convince you.
Talk about Dcipher Ent, when did you start and what are your goals?
D’cipher Ent. is something that myself and a couple of others put together. We are an entertainment group with the hopes of becoming a full running record label, God willing. It was founded a few years ago and has really been taking form in the last year and a half. Right now the focus is on me as soon as we get the momentum going we will be looking for other artist to come in and take over.
Whats next on the plate?
What I plan to do next is go harder than I ever have in every area of my life. I will not accept defeat and am ready for all challenges/challengers. I have a couple of projects that I am currently working on. A mixtape titled ‘Looking For A Fan Base vol#1” and a complete project that hasn’t been named yet. Keep your eyes open for it.
Where can we find you online?
You can find me on myspace.com/mrharvey617, mrharvey.com, on twitter.com/mr_harvey.
Shout your people out!
Hey I’m going to keep it short and sweet. I want to send a special shout out to all of you who have came across any of my work. Hope you enjoyed. Hit me up mrharvey.com and follow me on twitter.com/mrharvey

Exclusive Interview w/ BX Emcee, Darq

Darq, what it is fella? Let the people know who you are and what the F it is that you do!
What's good people. My name's Darq, I'm an emcee from the bronx and I spit my ass off!!!!
Your a beast on the mic, who are some of your favorite emcees?
There's a lot of them, but I would have to say AZ, Nas, Jigga and of course Big Pun forever.
If you could do a dream record with one artist and one producer, who would they be and what would fans experience?
If I had to chose an artist to work with, it would be AZ because his flow and his unique voice on a track with me would be a problem. He's been an idol of mine from jump. As far as a producer, I would have to say Eminem because I feel when he produces tracks for certain people he brings the beast out of them and fans would expect that to be a major record.
Whats up with the name Darq? Very unique, is there a story behind that?
There's is a very funny story behind the name. On the block before I ever started rapping, I got into a fight with a homie that couldn't speak english very well. Instead of saying he was going to give me a black eye, he said he was going to dark my eye. Of course we had jokes for a long time and when I did start rapping I was considering going by the dark knight. A friend suggested I lose the knight bit, since its been done. Drop K up Q and Darq became. When people ask me what it means to me, I tell them darq is a state of mind and we face that on a daily basis. Everyone can relate.
How important is it for a new artists to have a solid team around them? Who are some of the key players artists should have on their side?
Having a solid team is very important. You're only as strong as the people around you. I believe that the people you surround yourself with are key players and should be hand selected very carefully. They believe in you as an artist and will always have your best interest at heart. Your managers, lawyers, accountants, publicist, producers, and agents should all have the same focus and work ethic and the same goal: to get you where YOU need to be!
UMA time again and Darq is nominated! How does it feel to be in a category with some of the best new emcees out and be considered Most promising?
Actually the fact that I was nominated was a blessing in itself and to be in the category most promising made it even more worth it. When I saw the nominee list, I realized I had a mutual respect for a lot of the artists also nominated, so to be considered one of the best up and coming is an honor.
Lets talk about your approach to music and creating, do you have a specific formula to your own success?
Truthfully as an artist, rapping was never something that came naturally to me. I've seen so many emcees that anything they touched would fall into place. I had to work day and night to develop myself. When I'm writing in my zone, I try to be as honest and truthful as possible and live by t.t.s. True To Self.
Whats next on the agenda?
Next on the agenda is "Darq R.A.W.", my mixtape/street album and then getting the commercial album wrapped up.As always, I'll continue to keep myself in position to keep the darqness spreading and to get the right situation around what we have already started.
Where can fans find you online?
myspace.com/darqness
youtube.com/darqraw
facebook.com/darqraw
twitter.com/darqbxkid
Shout out your peoples!
Shout outs to every one holding me down, my too much entertainment fam, my kids, my squad, and all my supporters. I love yalll! Keep the darqness spreading!

Exclusive Interview with R&B Sensation Lafonda

What's going on Lafonda? Tell the people where you are from.
Hey! I am from the Boogie Down Bronx.
So let’s get into this. I hear you are gearing up to release a new EP entitled Don't Need a Cosign. Can you explain the whole meaning and conception of the project?
Yes I am releasing a new EP in a few months. I’m very excited about the new project. I titled the project Don't need a Cosign because in almost every record on the EP the concepts of the songs are basically talking about different situations dealing with how people break up or separate and felt like they were giving their all but their partners weren’t appreciative of what they had. I wanted to send out a message to everyone in general you don’t need a cosign, you don’t need anyone to validate you in a relationship. That’s why we also decided to use the “Don’t Need a Cosign” record as the first single on the EP even though it gives a general message for the ladies and the fellas but the songs on the EP actually give a little more detail and give you more of a picture and examples on what people go through when they break up in relationships.
What style of music can fans expect to hear from you on the new EP?
The style of music I would say R&B of course. Hip Hop and pop.
Whose production went into the project?
On this project I worked with producers such as Legend, Drawzilla, G Sparkz, Plaboy Chi and J-EYE Music.
How do you feel you've grown as an artist from your first CD, Go Hard or Go Home?
I think I’ve grown vocally, and that’s one of the most important things about being a singer. Fans want to see you grow vocally. They don’t want to see you stay at the same level so I’ve been out more with my vocal coach stimulating my vocals [laughs]. Also another thing that is different is that I am working with different producers on this project just to expand my sound and give it a slight edge. A little different but its still has that Lafonda sound.
Is there a set date right now for Don't Need a Cosign's release?
There is no exact date but we know for sure it will be in September.
Before we leave please tell the readers where they can find your music.
You Can find my music on Myspace.com/lafondaforever, YouTube.com/lafonda4ever and Imeem.com/thereallafonda.
