MogulStatus: What’s good RH Bless? Let the readers know about you and your movement. Let’s start with the name. How did that come about?
RH Bless: The name is RH Bless. The name stands for “rebel heart bearing light ethereal struggle survivor.” The movement, the crew is called Block Exchange – “the hierarchy of the streets;” young, gifted and business-minded street savvy individuals with love and passion for music. My name came about from my grandmother. She called all of her grandchildren her blessings. She called me her blessed one. I shortened it to Bless and then added the RH later on after a few other emcees using the name Bless came about. RH are the initials to my born name. It also stands for Red Hook – the section of Brooklyn I’m from – real Hip-Hop, rebel heart – that’s all me. Block Exchange came about with me bringing the concept of taking the financial and economic power of what the stock exchange represents and merging it with intelligent street savvy and business-minded individuals from the block – the Block Exchange.
MogulStatus: You have been able to make a lot of noise as an unsigned artist, collaborating with some major artists like Talib Kweli, Royce Da 5’9 and even Lil’ Wayne! How has this helped your exposure level and more importantly how important was the meaning of “relationships” when it came to securing these artists?
RH Bless: Building relationships is everything in this business. I’ve been fortunate to be able to appear on projects alongside some great artists and big names totally on the strength of my hustle and hand shaking. People recognize a true individual when they see one. My passion and drive for creating combined with my work ethic speaks for itself. That makes artist more willing to work with the likes of myself who is on the come up. It is a great help for my exposure and a greater help for my movement’s exposure because I’m always representing my Block Exchange family.
MogulStatus: Let’s talk about the Block Report DVD brand. You’ve highlighted several up-and-coming artists like Charles Hamilton, Joell Ortiz to legends like Big Daddy Kane and you also use it as a vehicle to promote yourself and others under the Block Report umbrella. How has this raised the awareness level of your project and what has it done for your brand in general?
RH Bless: Putting out B.L.O.C.K. Report DVD has made both RH Bless the artist and the entrepreneur a respected entity. It made Block Exchange a brand of integrity. Through the DVD we represent Hip-Hop and other Hip-Hop artists with respect and integrity and that’s exactly what we receive back from artists and fans alike. Credibility is everything when it comes to branding yourself, so the way that we choose to deliver ourselves to the masses is well thought out and executed.
MogulStatus: You have also been getting a lot of mixtape love, especially overseas from DJ Ophax and DJ Pimp. How did you build those relationships and how important is the overseas market to a new artist like yourself?
RH Bless: I’ve been fortunate to have toured overseas with some well known artist within the past ten years so I’ve known for quite some time now the importance of marketing yourself everywhere! There’s more than just NY or the US for that matter. Hip-Hop is global. The Internet of course provides a viable means to connect with emcees, deejays, promoters etcetera overseas. Through those outlets its how I’ve been able to appear on numerous mixtapes internationally. People like DJ Ophax and DJ Pimp are a blessing with the amount of support they give artists. It’s priceless.
MogulStatus: Now let’s talk business. What artists do you have represented under the Block Exchange brand?
RH Bless: Block Exchange is RH Bless, Preech the Revolution, Cess Wonder, Chippa Blu, Duss Smittoooo, Jay Wiz and Rocca.
MogulStatus: As an artist, business person, videographer and director how do you identify priority and juggle all the responsibilities?
RH Bless: My attitude towards wearing different hats as an artist, entrepreneur, videographer and director is that everything is of equal importance. No half-stepping on anything. Go hard with everything. My crew and I all have an extreme passion and drive which makes it easier to get things done.
MogulStatus: What’s next for RH Bless?
RH Bless: What’s next for RH Bless is to put out more work. We have the Bring That Beat Back Vol. 1 and the Block Exchange Disturbing the Streets mixtape series coming out. After that is the Unsignable, RH Bless street series. We are grinding – more videos to come as well. Next is the movie!
